With results in from 13% of polling stations at 10 a.m. local time, support for the ANC stood at 42.5%. In past elections, results from rural areas – where the ANC has major strongholds – have come in later, boosting results for the party. South Africa’s electoral commission has seven days to declare the final results by law. This year, the commission has set Sunday, June 2, as the final results day.

Jurors in the criminal trial of Donald J. Trump heard testimony from two key witnesses and a portion of the judge’s instructions to the jury read back to them in court on Thursday morning, one day after they asked for a refresher on the material. It is unclear what the requested material may reveal about what is happening in the jury room, and it is difficult to draw any conclusions about the state of their conversations over Mr. Trump’s guilt or innocence. The testimony the jurors requested to hear included questions posed by both the defense and the prosecution to David Pecker, the former publisher of The National Enquirer, and Michael D. Cohen, Mr. Trump’s former fixer. They were the first and last witnesses to testify for the prosecution and the two who spent the most time on the stand during the trial. Both spoke about working during Mr. Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign to suppress unflattering stories about Mr. Trump while promoting negative stories about his political rivals.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has a line about the state of small-scale agriculture in America these days. It’s drawn from the National Agricultural Statistics Service, which shows that as the average size of farms has risen, the nation had lost 544,000 of them since 1981. “That’s every farm today that exists in North Dakota and South Dakota, added to those in Wisconsin and Minnesota, added to those in Nebraska and Colorado, added to those in Oklahoma and Missouri,” Mr. Vilsack told a conference in Washington this spring. “Are we as a country OK with it?”Even though the United States continues to produce more food on fewer acres, Mr. Vilsack worries that the loss of small farmers has weakened rural economies, and he wants to stop the bleeding. Unlike his last turn in the same job, under former President Barack Obama, this time his department is able to spend billions of dollars in subsidies and incentives passed under three major laws since 2021 — including the biggest investment in conservation programs in U.S. history.

Federal graduate school loans are more expensive, too, with higher interest rates than loans for undergraduate studies. On top of that, 55% of master's degree-holders have debt from both their undergraduate and graduate studies, owing an average total of over $69,000. Similar to undergraduate degrees, science, technology, engineering and math-related master's degrees tend to lead to higher-paying salaries compared with degrees in the arts and humanities. That said, these are the 10 master's degrees with the highest average starting salaries for the class of 2022, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers. In fact, fewer than 60% of master's degree programs deliver a positive return on investment, according to a recent study by The Foundation for Research on Equal Opportunity.

HONG KONG — A Hong Kong court on Thursday found 14 of 16 pro-democracy activists guilty of conspiring to subvert the state in the Chinese territory's single largest case under a sweeping national security law imposed by Beijing. Of those, 31 pleaded guilty in the hopes of a reduced sentence, while the remaining 16 pleaded not guilty. Hong Kong had had a 100% conviction rate in national security cases, which are prosecuted under rules that diverge from the city's legal norms, including presumption against bail. Almost 300 people have been arrested under the national security law, which came into force in the summer of 2020. The charges stem from an informal primary election held in July 2020 in which more than 600,000 voters selected pro-democracy candidates for a legislative election that was scheduled for that September.
